Neurotransmitter of ANS

Acetylcholine (Ach)

It is the main neurotransmitter of parasympathetic system and released from:

  1. Nerve endings of pre-ganglionic parasympathetic and sympathetic neurons.

  2. Nerve terminals of post-ganglionic parasympathetic neurons.

Noradrenaline (N-Ad):

  • It is the main neurotransmitter of the sympathetic system.

  • It is released from the post-ganglionic sympathetic nerve terminals.

  • Exception: The post-ganglionic nerve terminals to the sweat glands are anatomically sympathetic, but their neurotransmitter is acetylcholine.
